From my memory, it always felt like BL anime existed as a genre for as drawn-out as I can remember. Before BL dramas or movies became mainstream, BL animes and mangas were like the first frontier, depicting male romances in fiction even when it was taboo in society.
In anime, the BL genre is closely related to yaoi or shounen ai, which are labels that describe a very similar type of story. Yaoi is more explicit, shounen ai is more innocent, and BL tends to be the best of both worlds. This genre is a popular niche among certain demographics. I don't love using the term fujoshi, which has somewhat negative connections. Let's just say that people with good taste usually monitor BL animes!
Despite its long history, there is surprisingly not a lot of anime to monitor in this genre. Trust me, I've done my research on this topic, searching high and low for some BL anime recommendations. You'd be amazed and disappointed at how little the selection there is compared to all the other genres.
And since the selection is so miniature, this makes it even harder for a good anime series to come along.

The closest series that I can think of which seem to involve actual male-male romance rather than just blatant fanservice, ecchi or overly stereotypical portrayals (some of these are still stereotypical at times, but not as horribly as most coughcoughGakuenHeavenPapatoKissintheDarkcoughcough) are probably Loveless, Junjou Romance, Close the Last Door (OVA) and the aforementioned Gravitation.
Loveless: Despite the overt moeiness of the designs, this series does a good occupation of deeply exploring human needs and relationships. While its not the centerpiece of the exhibit or its driving plot, the main characters relationship with another man is a major portion of the series. Its not always pleasant, and, at times, even cruel. But, its a better than average look at the form human maturation can take under a great deal of stress.
In other words, male-male romance, but not the fluffy bunnies, requited feelings, nonmanipulative kind. Also, some graphic sexuality that comes with the kind of series that would chose the moe-moe angle this one did.
