Queer Southeast Asia,
In , en route to a comic event in Jakarta, my attention was caught by the enormous smiles from couples whose large-scale portraits blaringly announced their respective marriages at an event venue. These ornate marriage announcements verb my expectation that I was entering a gendered space. Interestingly, unlike the signs outside the venue that celebrated heteronormative unions, the comic event I attended involved young people whose comics challenged these norms. Surrounded by young attendees, from high university and university students to new professionals, I weaved through rows of tables featuring cute art works, comic diaries, and experimental comic art. In between these busy tables, a handful of works caught my attention as these came with labels called boys love (henceforth referred to as BL), a genre that explores male-male
The Life and Comics of Howard Cruse
Nominated for the Eisner Award - Best Academic/Scholarly Work
The Life and Comics of Howard Cruse tells the remarkable story of how a self-described “preacher’s kid” from Birmingham, Alabama, became the so-called “Godfather of Gay Comics.” This study showcases a remarkable fifty-year career that included working in the s underground comics scene, becoming founding editor of the groundbreaking anthology series Gay Comix, and publishing the graphic novel Stuck Rubber Baby, partially based on his own experience of coming of age in the Civil Rights era.
Through his exploration of Cruse’s life and work, Andrew J. Kunka also chronicles the dramatic ways that gay culture changed over the course of Cruse’s lifetime, from Cold War-era homophobia to the gay liberation movement to the AIDS crisis to the legalization of gay marriage. Highlighting Cruse’s skills as a trenchant satirist and social commentator, Kunka explores how he cast a queer look at American politics, mainstream comics culture, and the gay community’s possess norms.

Gay Hearthrobs (complete)
Gay Heart Throbs was an underground comic featuring gay erotica. Only three issues were published, in , , and [1] It has been described as the first gay comic.[2][1] It was edited by Larry Fuller.
The short-lived comic struggled to find an audience. It has been compared to the more successful and influential Gay Comix, which debuted in and opted for more emotionally nuanced content, as opposed to the "campy erotica" of Gay Heart Throbs.[3]
The title is thought to be a reference to Heart Throbs, a romance comic published from to [4]
The second and third issue were illustrated by Mike Kuchar, who described the artwork in the first issue as "not good".[5] Though already known as an underground filmmaker, Gay Heart Throbs was Kuchar's first job as an illustrator, and he was contacted for many more jobs involving erotic illustration on the strength of his work on the comic.
