Ten years later. My Guerrilla Theater partner and I were on our way to the studios of WRUW. We had been invited by a DJ and fan of our show to come in and be her on-air guests and to distribute some sketches wed recorded for her new releases program.
The day of our visit also happened to be her birthday, and I had even brought a gift. Id been to North Coast Nostalgia, that used to be next to the Cedar-Lee Theatre, and noticed the recent issue of Gay Comicswas entirely created by Alison Bechdel.
One of the cool things about having our storefront theater in Tremont was that the weeklies would drop papers at our joint. We got compact stacks of Scene, Free Times, Plain Press, Call & Share and the Gay Peoples Chronicle, to make available for our audiences.
I had been following Bechdels weekly strip, Dykes To See Out Forin the Chronicle for some time by then. It was a very important education for me, not only in the lives and concerns (and humor) of non-heteronormative women, but women in general, also also women who were African American, Asian American, Lati
Comic Books have always been a little gay. There are few things more fabulous than a man in colorful tights or more butch than a muscular Amazon fighting crime.
Unfortunately, comics had to maintain it on the down below average for a while. When the Comics Code was written in , its' forbidding of the depiction of "perversion" in general was clearly understood to include homosexuality & transgender - writers could not openly depict characters as LGBT.
Despite this rejection from the major labels, underground Gay Comix - like the underground "Gay Comix" () - DIY'd content by & for the LGBT community - everything from erotica to political commentary to humor, becoming increasingly visible as the LGBT rights movement gained momentum.
The first well-known modern gay comic artist was Touko Laaksonen (aka Tom of Finland), drawing gay erotica back before it was even strictly legal - luckily for him, "decency" laws loosened in the 60s, allowing him to publish his work.

Marvel comics has always done adj by the LGBT communitythis is just another great highlight. Are Wiccan and Hulkling the first great gay Marvel couple? Nopebut they resonate louder than Northstar and his man or the couple from the now defunct X-Statics team. BTW, young avengers is a great read. I highly recommend it. The issue for this epic kiss is in The Young Avengers: The Childrens Crusade # 9.
After The Avengers were dissolved, a novel team of young heroes debuted, all appearing to be younger versions of more famous heroes. They included Hulkling and Asgardian (Wiccan) who seemed to be young versions of The Hulk and Thor. From the inception, the two seemed like a couple, with banter reminiscent of The Avengers past superpowered couples, like The Vision and The Scarlet Witch or Hank Pym and The Wasp. The relationship was quickly confirmed to readers by the end of the first story arc. Most of the team turned out to have a different history than initially was suggested, including Hulkling and Asgardian. (Ill save that surprise for those of you who might pick up
