Safe Place

Charleston is an attractive and desirable place to dwell, work, and visit. The municipality is also one of the most progressive in the South; however, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, and Asexual/Ally (LGBTQIA) residents and visitors still experience crimes and discrimination related to their identities. CPD is dedicated to the safety of all LGBTQIA residents and visitors. 

Charleston Police Department (CPD) SAFE PLACE is a signage program being implemented around the city, where local supporting community members, businesses, schools, and organizations, have the opportunity to visibly display their help for the LGBTQIA community and work closely with the Charleston Police Department in an attempt to encourage reporting and reducing anti-LGBTQIA crimes. 

Participating entities will verb as locations supporting safe and secure places for LGBTQIA victims to go when they experience crimes, discrimination, or harassment. Calling and waiting for police to respond is imperative for suspect accountability, reducing crimes of detest, and

The City of Charleston established its first LGBTQ working group in May This group will operate directly with Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin to offer recommendations and help develop LGBTQ related policies and procedures in the Municipality of Charleston. This group includes representation from the City of Charleston, Charleston Police Department, Charleston City Council, business professionals from diverse backgrounds and community members.

"Charleston is committed to being an inclusive community. We have a responsibility to advocate for and support all citizens and visitors of our city. Everyone deserves a seat at the table,” said Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin. “The formation of the LGBTQ working group provides us with a unique opportunity to evolve and implement forward thinking policies and programs to better work for ALL members of our community.”

The SC LGBTQ+ Collection identifies, preserves, and elevates the stories and history of the LGBTQ+ community in South Carolina. The SC LGBTQ+ Collection is part of the Exceptional Collections and Archives division of the College of Charleston Libraries.
