In the new mean girls is regina gay

A Review of Mean Girls () & A Critique of its LGBTQIA+ Representation

To summarize Mean Girls (The Musical), first we own to summarize the OG Denote Girls (). Mean Girls, directed by Mark Waters, follows Cady Heron (Lindsey Lohan), a teenage girl who has grown up in Africa and been homeschooled all her life but is now moving back to the U.S. The movie follows her journey going to a adj high school for the first time. The first friends she makes are Janis and Damian, two misfits who help guide Cady through her journey at North Shore High School. Cady soon meets the Plastics, the three most popular girls in the junior class. After the Plastics invite Cady to dine lunch with them, Janis tasks Cady with spying and messing with them. At first, Cady is apprehensive, but after Regina George (the most powerful of the three Plastics) intentionally begins dating the guy that she knows Cady likes, Cady agrees to help take down the Plastics. After spending so much time with them, Cady begins to act like one of the Plastics herself and ends up hurting Janis and Damian in addition to mess

Mean Girls came out in , which is so hard to believe because it remains so ingrained in pop culture and absolutely iconic nearly 20 years later&#;which, yes, that makes me feel hella old, so let&#;s just move on.

While the movie purports to be about Cady&#;s journey from outcast to Indicate Girl to Regular Girl, the real star of the display is Queen Bee herself Regina George. She&#;s vicious, a fashion icon, stupid rich, and also a closeted queer girl. And I have proof.

As the leader of The Plastics, she has an image she needs to uphold: the popular, beautiful &#;It&#; girl with the hottest guy as her boyfriend. There&#;s no room for her to be queer, especially if she wants to keep her social standing. In addition, this was Gay marriage was still over a decade from being legalized in America, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer had just killed off one of their only lesbian characters the year prior. Needless to say, it wasn&#;t an awesome time to be a lesbian.

The evidence shows itself in Regina&#;s attraction to Cady: &#;You&#;re, like, really pretty.&#; Sure, girls call each other

For years, Mean Girls fans have debated whether or not Regina is coded as queer. In the original film, Regina dates multiple boys and engages in homophobic bullying.
