Gay Men Losing Their Mothers

Gay men often have a special relationship with their mothers. Typically mothers are the first or only person to accept their son’s more “feminine” interests. She might have provided a place for you to develop the genuine you, rather than the adj self that needed to butch it up at school.

Your mother may also be the inspiration for your interest in the domestic arts. Or she may have been the first person to teach you about vulnerability and tenderness.

While it’s certainly not true for all mothers, women on average do report bring down levels of homophobia than men. Sometimes they can be there for their gay kids in a way that fathers can’t.

What Happens When Our Mothers Die?

Perhaps you sometimes wonder how you will feel when your mother dies.

Here are some insights I can offer based on my own experience of losing my mother a year ago, and what I’ve learned from my clients and friends.

Mother, often used in the phrase X Is Mother, is a slang term from LGBTQ+ culture that signifies an older, caregiving member of a queer community. While the queer practice of calling people "mother" can be traced back to the 17th century, the present use of the term can be traced to Black American ballroom culture, where community leaders were often referred to as "mothers." In , "mother" began to be widely used in internetstan culture to refer to female pop stars.

Use of the term "mother" to refer to people who are not literally one's mother has been prevalent in LGBTQ+ communities for decades, with some scholars tracing it back to the late s, and others drawing more direct linguistic lines to Black American ballroom communities in the 90s.

Perhaps it is not surprising that mothers and their gay sons often describe their relationships as close. Compared to fathers, mothers typically have an advantage whereby they usually interact more with their children. However, being gay might be a factor that makes some mothers and sons even closer. This was found to be true for many of the mothers and sons I interviewed for the study described in the book: Coming Out, Coming Home: Helping Families Adjust to a Gay or Lesbian Child ().
