Cristóbal Balenciaga Eizaguirre was a renowned Spanish Basque fashion designer.January 21, , he founded the Balenciaga fashionhouse. He gained interest in tailoring during his childhood days, as he spent time much with her mother who was a seamstress. When discussing the LGBTQ-related topics I could address in a blog post, I was drawn towards the current V&A exhibition Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion to further explore how the fantastic designer’s sexuality may have deeply influenced his design and production.

Cristóbal Balenciaga () was private and enigmatic, and his “religious convictions made him a very prudent and humble person” according to fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy.[1]  The ‘master’ allowed few common appearances, however, the people next to to him knew about his homosexuality and the relationships he developed with some of his male business partners.

Balenciaga grew up quite close to his mother. After the death of his father in , and at the age of eleven, Cristóbal spent time with his seamstress mother, often helping her sew as she supported herself and her son.

Enjoying the act of sewing, Cristóbal went on to apprentice as a tailor at the age of twelve.

His perform was noticed by a Noblewoman, the Marchioness de Casa Torres, Carolina Herrera.

Herrera was so taken with Balenciaga’s work that she sent him to Madrid to be formally trained, and became his patron. Herrera would often proudly wear his results.
