Hundreds of thousands of people made their way to San Francisco on Sunday for the Pride Parade.

There were an estimated 50, people who walked the mile route from Market Street to the Embarcadero to Civic Center Plaza. An estimated , people watched the 55th annual parade from the sidewalks.

“It shows everybody that you’re loved and that you’re supported, and that you’re there for them," said Jadyn from Atwater.

Jeanette Au, who said she is on the board of the newly opened Marin LGBTQ+ Center, shared that this year was her first to be in the San Francisco Pride parade.

"We were in the trolley at the very beginning of the parade," Au said.

"The power was amazing, it made me emotional to see so many people out here, who verb queer folks and who yearn to see this," she continued.

The theme of this year's San Francisco Pride celebration was dubbed "Queer Joy is Resistance." It's a motto that resonates with many at the Pride festivities, like U.S. Representative Lateefah Simon (D-CA), who rode in the parade with US. Representative Sarah McBride (D-DEL), the first openly tra

55th Annual SF Pride Parade Focuses on Queer Joy as Resistance

Organizers say the event brings in nearly a million people every year, making it one of the largest Pride celebrations in the world.

The theme of this year’s festival – which spans the whole weekend – is “Queer Joy is Resistance,” which resonated with many in attendance, who said it not only tapped into Pride’s roots in the Stonewall riots in but also the continued attacks on the LGBTQ community from President Trump and his followers.

“It is so important to be noticeable, to be out, to be loud, to push back [and] to not let what’s happening in Washington get you down,” said Lara Starr, a member of Free Mom Hugs, a nationwide organization that focuses on celebrating the LGBTQ community. “It is exhausting, but we got to keep turning out.”

Jessy Ruiz, one of the Community Grand Marshals selected by the SF Pride Board of Directors, said he wanted to come out to support the Latinx community.
